An asteroid to hit earth? An international research team including NASA are saying that a 560 meter asteroid could hit earth in 2182 with enough force to destroy a city. In an article in the scientific journal Icarus, a researcher from the Valladolid University in Spain, Maria Eugenia Sansaturio states "The total impact probability of asteroid 1999 RQ36 can be estimated at 0.00092 – approximately one-in-a-thousand chance – but what is most surprising is that over half of this chance (0.00054) corresponds to 2182.â€
No need to panic.We have 172 years to figure out what to do about it which looks like a job for the new defense office that a NASA task force is calling for. "Protecting Earth from menacing space rocks that could impact our planet should be designated a top-level NASA strategic goal, according to an agency task force. To achieve that goal, NASA should establish a Planetary DefenseCoordination Office to oversee the effort." The task force is concerned with not only identifying threats from near earth objects but are willing to work with the international community toward prevention of asteroid impacts. Wish this underfunded agency well.
