When Apple's iPad came out there was nothing to compare it to, there was Amazon's Kindle, but that was not really in the same category for competition. Now the Associated Press reports Samsung is revealing a new PC tablet, Galaxy Tab. The tablet is meant to rivals the iPad offering new features and possibilities like mobile video conferencing and video chat function.
Thomas Richter, Head of Portfolio Management for Telecommunications Europe of Samsung presented the new tablet this morning, September 2nd, at the world's largest consumer electronics trade fair in Berlin, Germany. J.K. Shin, the head of Samsung's mobile division, notes that "The Samsung Galaxy Tab has been designed to enable consumers to maximize their online experience wherever that may be."
The Galaxy Tab weighs 3.4 ounces and has a 7-inch touch screen. The screen is three times bigger than Apple's iPhone, but 1/3 the size of its iPad. Running on Google's Android 2.2 operating system it can run Flash--unlike the iPad. The Galaxy supports Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G cell phone networks, making it a smart phone and laptop.
The Galaxy appears to be an over-sized cell phone or a mini-computer. Despite all the bells and whistles the competition this brings against the iPad might be slimmer than Samsung had hoped for. Is Samsung's Galaxy Tab something you would exchange your current cell phone and laptop for?

My cell phone does nothing but make phone calls and receive calls. I can't text with it because I told the phone company to shut that portion off. I can't take a picture with it because it doesn't have a camera in it. All I want is a phone that I can carry with me in case of an emergency. I don't need to tell everyone where I am every 5 minutes, I don't need a constant internet connection all day, I don't need to change my status on Facebook every hour, all of that can wait until I get home.
I'm not sure what's going on in the world these days and where is everyone getting the money for all these expensive toys?
Calling the iPad a toy is a bit off I think. Fairly soon I think a lot of people will want something like this, that is bigger and more powerful than a cellphone, but not as big or expensive as a laptop, and something that does not have personal data on it that can be compromised.
My iPad is a mobile window into the Internet, phone and in some cases even the media system. I'd be happier if it had a camera and could be used a cellphone. I can Skype though, so I can used it as a phone ... it's just not free yet.
