Lady Gaga's meat dress at the 2010 VMA music awards is not really a touch of artificial skin, but a synthetic creation of art that furthers her brand as a unique artist. According to USA Today, the "meat dress" is an example of her right to free expression, while the artificial skin touch is an example of leaps bounds in technology and intelligence.
Researchers at the University of California Berkley may not have created a Meat Dress like the one worn by Lady Gaga at the 2010 VMAs, but the touch of artificial skin is the consolation prize. Â According to Reuters, Ali Javey, an electrical engineer and his team created the artificial skin from geranium, wire mesh, silicon, and sticky wire. Â They were able to form a semi-conductor film that was molded into a pressure sensitive rubber. This "artificial skin" was able to detect subtle forces from typing on a keyboard, the weight of a butterfly, and perhaps the weight of Lady Gaga's meat dress worn at the MTV VMA music awards.
Expression vs utility
"If we ever wanted a robot that could unload the dishes, for instance, we'd want to make sure it doesn't break the wine glasses in the process. But we'd also want the robot to be able to grip a stock pot without dropping it," Javey said in a statement.
When this material is stretched, the artificial skin measures the change in electrical activity. "The change in the thickness of the material is converted into an electrical signal," Javey said. Â It's utility is the assistance of those who have artificial limbs or prosthetics.
Lady Gaga's meat dress worn at the MTV VMAs last night and the creation of artificial skin touch material are examples of expression and innovation, respectively. Â They both employ a degree of creation and technology that serves it's purpose: expression and and the advancement of science, respectively. Â Perhaps, our next off-beat creations instead of a Lady Gaga meat dress or touch of artificial skin is a veggie dress draped on artificial bones.
