It all began when a young photographer named Nev Schullman became Facebook friends with an 8 year old painter named Abby Pierce. This leads to Nev becoming inolved in a romantic relationship with Abby's older sister Megan that was conducted entirely through social networking. Nev's relationship with the Michigan girls caught the attention of his older brother Ariel Schullman and Ariel's friend Henry Joost. Prompted by curiosity about the nature of Nev's relationship with the girls and suspicions that were raised after learning some details about Megan's personal life, the two filmmakers drove to Michigan to learn the truth. The result is a film called Catfish that will appear in limited release in theaters this Friday.
The story in this intriguing film which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival this year becomes no less mysterious when you attempt to learn its plot from people that have seen it. Is this simply a story of social networking leading to virtual friendship? Or virtual romance? Or is it something else entirely? Apparently the film is full of twists and turns and even the reason for the title of Catfish is not known until the end.
Have you had any social networking experiences that you think are film worthy?
