With the Sony Playstation Network down for nearly a week, it appears that not only video games are affected. Also being hit hard by this service disruption are video game companies, losing valuable time and money in their business ventures.
One report notes that 4 of the 5 bestselling PS3 games right now involves online game environments. Without access to the Playstation Network aka "PSN," these titles may be taking a hit. For the most part, they also feature compelling offline gameplay, but there are problems for other game developers.
For example, there are smaller companies producing online games sold via the Playstation Store. Without PlayStation Network down, these titles are rendered unavailable for an indefinite amount of time while Sony rebuilds its network for better security. The smaller companies suffer in terms of online exposure for their titles paving the way towards big success.
Sony has noted that with their PlayStation Network down, they are rebuilding it to be stronger against cyber hackers when all is said and done. Unfortunately, the downtime is hurting the pockets of small companies looking to make it big. It's hard to gauge how much money might be lost by any of the companies with top selling titles on Sony's store or even those that are popular at Amazon.com and other online retailers. Hopefully these companies had a good backup plan and made their titles available for Nintendo Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360!
Should Sony be reimbursing gamers and game developers for this lost time, or is it just unfortunate circumstances?
