Sony PlayStation Network Down: When is PSN Back Up Online? May 7 Update

Thanks Matt for the update. I think people need to let Sony do what they have to do to make it as safe as they can.I think Sony has to remember that no matter what they do there will always be someone that will find a way to get in. These people are very good at what they do and have nothing but time on their hands. Just like anti-virus they always update so they always find a way to get in but its is sad they have to attack a video game system. So kids go outside play find a girlfriend or bug your parents it won't be up any sooner if you complain. :)

I agree with Guy 100%, some us are adults with girlfriends or wives and we do have a life. But the constant horseshit that keeps coming out of the Sony corporations mouth, has gotten way beyond ridiculous. They state this day it will be up, then this day, then this day. WTF!!! This all came to be, because Sony went on the cheap and did not secure their servers, the way they were supposed to. Mike don't be a brown-nose for Sony. WAKE UP and smell the manure their shoveling. A week to find out that information was taken, another week to add new security and what now, another week to test it? HORSESHIT!!!

I have a feeling that PSN will never come back up! i have been a fan of Playstation and sony since i was a kid! And NOW Shit like this happens?! WHO THE HELL RUNS THIS HELLHOLE! Even XBOX didn't have problems of this magnatude! I wish i was still on Xbox Live!

Mike, I cound't agree with you more about the safety measures Sony needs to put in place to ensure a safe playground for everyone. However, Sony on the other hand could have taken a "high alert" stance from day one to ensure these types of things wouldn't and couldn't happen with such maginitude. No system is fool proof and noone should expect it to but closer monitering on Sony's part could have prevented this from taking so long. Hopefully this will open Sony's eyes a bit to the inevitable threat of lifeless hacks (pun intended) who have nothing better to do than hack a gaming system.

Look on the bright side for all of you who play MW2 or BlackOps, this gives you time to master the special op and campaign missions.

You see, the free network and the premium network access to Sony Playstation is a huge selling point to their product and what has helped to make it far more popular then the XBox. These people you refer to as whinning, bitching and crying in your various posts are the customers of Sony Playstation, and they are expressing their dissatisfaction with the product they purchased. Their tone may be boorish or even crass, but they are they life blood of Sony Playstaion none the less.

So, before running off on another useless rant of how others should live their lives, spend their time or study English grammar, perhaps you should consider that the customer is always right. Sony is making a huge mistake by not only taking too long to bring their network back on line, but also in informing their customers of current changes in the status of maintenance issues.

Ok, I get it!! This wasn't started based upon a rational statement... Oh wait.... It was! I think we can all say that we are frustrated with what is going on with the PSN, otherwise we wouldn't be posting on this site! Yes, PSN should stick to a deadline and not lead people on. However, when it comes to outsourcing security to a third party firm the two companies might not always be speaking the same language. YOU go try to orchestrate a re-up of a network of such large proportions as the PSN and see how easy it is to get it back up ( keep in mind, they don't ever want this to happen again) and you will truely know what a company faces when they are dealing with not only pissed of customers but also shareholders. I suppose Joey never went to college and never understood the MOST simple concepts of a business or corp. PSN let it's guard down and not yet but possibly let out some financial info from some of their customers which could lead to lawsuits. I don't want to go too far into the lagistics of how a corporation handles matters like this but I would like to say that it is not the end of the world and if you choose to cry about it, I agree with Mike, I will contribute to the Nation Tissue Fund.

Personally, I don't care if you contribute to the Nation Tissue Fund or the Help People Understand Economics Fund. Sony is losing huge dollars right now. They are bleeding money with their reputation. The longer it takes them to get this system back on line, the more tenuous their economic position becomes. People do not pay premium money for online games they can not use.

I couldn't agree more about being upset about the run around sony has been givin us but I dont think they even have a clue at to what is going on. I have spent good money on gaming gear headset and games now they are just collecting dust witch I think is a crock of sh#$. Another thing I think a lawyer is writting their updates because funny most of them are the same thing just wrote with different words and like you said we paid damn good money so i think we are owed a honest anwser not B.S . I just love this! Andy, the writer with REAL LIFE answers, lmao. Obviously you have not been keeping track of what Sony has been dishing out since DAY ONE. First, they left everyone wondering what happened (they had shut down the network themselves), but forgot to inform the public. Second, they said it was some external intrusion (made it sound like some minor hiccup), said network would be up in a day or two. Why say that if you're not sure? They wanted to make sure that they could cash in on all the new releases of 4/19/11. Third, after the 2 days deadline had lapsed into 4, they came out with, "Oh our first estimates of the problem, were way off and BTW most of ur personal info, maybe even some financial info, may have been compromised." Basically its what they said, maybe not in so many words, but you get the point. Then came the restructuring of security and then the testing and testing, etc. Then came the restoration dates, which never materialized, but they kept posting them. Oh by this day it should be up, then it was this day and so on and so forth. If you don't know when it will be up, then you need to admit it. If by admitting ur not 100% sure brings consequences, they can't be any worse than whats happening now. People are looking at Sony as being incompetent. I for one am inclined to believe that is the case. Maybe next time they won't give a date and they can save us and themselves a lot of BS.
BTW if you were to read the statement made by Mike, his condescending attitude towards the gamers is what started this off, like all gamers are kids?

Thanks for the insight Sam. I never said Sony is or should be off the hook. I was just stressing the fact that they messed up big time and were totally caught off guard with this security breach. I also agree that Sony misled consumers to push product in lue of news that their cash-cow had been compromised. It will take a long time to make sure this doesn't happen again and I'm glad they are taking the steps needed to ensure that.
I am equally upset about my gear, games and spot on the couch that is designated for gaming that is all collecting dust. Now I just finish special op missions instead.
Patiently awaiting the system to get back up, I am optimistic that it will be safer and better guarded against these attacks. Sony MESSED UP but there is nothing you as the consumer can do, besides switch to Xbox or find different hobbies and sell your PS and games. Malice will not get this up faster!!

BTW, Mike's comment didn't infer that all gamers are children. However, the one's who complain like children are probably children. Everyone posting needs to take it down a notch and calm down I was venting, security is important im just pointing out that it is taking way too long for a a multi billion dollar corparation. And Mike you WERE stereotyping.

Cybercrime is rife, and attacks are constant with your personal details, if shared online, constantly at risk but we're protected by the banking system and can easily change things like email addresses if necessary.

To be honest, I'm amazed that it has taken the hackers this long to get at PSN but Sony will get it all sorted in the end, and we'll be provided with a better service as a result.

I really don't care when it comes back up, i just think as a "professional company" they should not be spitting out when it is going to be back up, when they obviously don't know. I bought mw2 for my ps3 to get away from the pc version, but that is what i have been stuck playing...

The problem with people is that they are not pactient. And to people who play day and night and can't seem to live without PSN....IT'S JUST A FUCKING VIDEO GAME! Who cares when it comes back up. Wow, people really need to calm down. I love playing my games, but there are plenty of other things to do. Don't rush them or the same thing will happen because there will be flaws if they rush. And people need to remember that Sony does have other things to worry about other than a free online video game service. Sony is a global multi billion dollar corporation that has many different products to worry about. And if they don't keep that up, you can kiss PSN goodbye. It won't kill anyone to wait for PSN to get back up and you don't have to play online constantly. I remember a time when there wasn't online gaming and people were just as content with their games.

I have been with Sony for years now. I have bought every new products Sony has made, I can't find anything better then the Sony HDTV it is amazingly awesome. My point is that it is not often for there to be any inconvenience at all with their products. I bet there has been 100s or more of other attempts to hack into PSN. Technology is getting more advanced every minute of every day. People could probably find new ways to hack PSN all the time but Sony has kept things like this from happening most of the time it's not like this happens a lot. Sony is obviously rich as hell for a damn reason. I can't imagine anyone doing anything like them. Just be thankful they working on it at all they don't want this to happen again. So the people who are whining like babies about how long this is taking just switch to Xbox and have fun complaining about unreliable THEY are.

They have definitely had enough time to get this fixed, especially if they are working "around the clock" like they claim to be! Hopefully the fuckin hackers are found soon so they can show Sony how to fix there damn server! I think I'll be better off waitin on Diablo III than waitin on these slow fucks!

To all you guys who are moaning about the psn not being back up. You need to lay off of sony they are trying to fix and make the network a lot more secure to protect YOUR details from being nicked. We need to be annoyed at the hackers and what these scumbags have done. Give sony the time they need to sort it out so we get a better service nd just remember it is free. And if people fix that xbox is the way to go, just remember they have their fair share of troubles as well. Besides what did you do when there was no online gaming, I'm pretty certain you played the game and enjoyed the campains and getting through to the next level. I haven't read every post on this thread, but I am going to say a few things regardless. Joey Berret your comments and "insults" make you look like a complete idiot and had rendered anything you have had to say from that point on moot. Also to all the people complaining about how long it is taking Sony to get the PSN up and running again, I completely understand and I am frustrated as much as the next guy because there is a lot of DLC I want to purchase. The thing here is the kind of work Sony is doing right now takes A LOT of time and it is monotonous. I know this from experience. I am a Network administrator and I have had to build, upgrade , and tear down only to rebuild many business networks. Depending on the size, complexity, and how secure you want it, All factor into the amount of work hours. I've seen small business networks with just two offices(separate buildings in separate cities) take a week to get up and running. Also I've seen a decent size corporate level network frak ups that caused their network to be down for a month...they got hit hard by what I'm guessing was a skilled script kiddie wiped out several data servers. Now think of the size of the PSN it is MASSIVE I for one would love and hate to be working on this project. The PSN is a network that connects millions of people. They aren't just re-booting a couple servers here guys. They will have it up may be a bit but it will be back up none the less and I for one cannot wait.

Also there is no proof that anyones credit card information was stolen....rumors yes but its the frakin Internet 50% total bullshit 45%porn 5% actual data you can trust. The credit card info was encrypted I'd like to know what kind of encryption but that's just because of my profession. Passwords where hashed which is the method I use on the networks I run it is actually one of the more commons ways to secure a password at least in the business arena.

Also this isn't entirely Sony's Fault. They where hacked it isn't like the hackers called and informed them of the attack. Sony could have been up to date with all their servers security patches...highly doubt it most companies aren't. O and Sony wasn't the only company attacked that week...though I believe if it was one group Sony was their main target. Furthermore Sony is an entertainment business not like Lifelock who was hacked and they specialize in keeping your identity safe....

Another thing your name and address and yes even your phone number is all over the Internet and has been long before the Sony attack. Also it is everywhere off the Internet even if you just purchased a Computer and PS3 a couple days before the attack. Two words....Phone...Book.

Sony was the victim just as much as all of us. Sony though does have responsibilities they slacked on.
Do they OWE us anything? NO read the UELA you agreed to. Yet they have offered for free Identity theft insurance to all PSN users for free. If you take that offer you are insured for up to $1million...On top of the freebies they are giving us .

Last thing I want Sony to make damn sure Sony has there network as secured as current technology allows. Because if the group that attack them is the one I think it is they will attack again...and its over something I'm kinda on the fence about. A lawsuit against a Hacker who Jail Broke his Ps3 settled out of court with the promise he wont hack any Sony products again...If you pay hundreds of dollars for something you should be allowed to do what you will with it as long as it doesn't effect anyone else. If they did retaliate and this was their doing it is a gross over-reaction.....And coming from a Hacktivist group it isn't cool they hurt the users in this attack, If it was indeed them I have lost a bit of respect....if it was them. (I may have made an error just now bumping my mouse and a few keys on my keyboard at the same time if I did I'll look at it later,,,and correct it.)

OH! one last thing people with netflix it still works just keep trying to sign in eventually netflix will load and the login prompt will stop I just watched an episode of Battlestar Galactica (new series not the old one) on my ps3 before I started typing this. Hulu plus subscribers however are fraked. I recommend buying Video card with an HDMI port to hook to your HDTV(assuming you have at least a decent duel-core CPU and I'd recommend 4Gb of Memory (not hard drive space thats called storage) but I'm sure you can get by with 1-2gb with a 1gb HD video card to get at least 720p. well I'm done ranting.
