Freddy Krueger has officially invaded the nightmares of your favorite Mortal Kombat warriors. You can now download him on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network, allowing the horror icon to trade bloody blows with the likes of Liu Kang, Scorpion and Sub-Zero.
Although last month's Comic-Con announcement of Freddy Krueger as the final piece of Mortal Kombat DLC came as a shock to some, good ol' Freddy fits the MK franchise like a claw-wielding glove (bad pun intended). Aesthetically, he takes on the look of Jackie Earl Haley's Freddy from the 2010 Nightmare on Elm Street remake, touting two spiky claws as opposed to his signature one.
Developers NetherRealm Studios actually did a fine job incorporating Mr. Nightmare into the Mortal Kombat storyline. Shao Kahn essentially pulls Freddy Krueger out of the dream realm, making him mortal and keeping him from tormenting the nightmares of children all over Elm Street. Needless to say, Freddy is pissed and wants revenge. Cue fatalities!
Gameplay wise, Freddy is pretty newbie-friendly, with teleports, launchers and fireballs that make him play a bit like Quan-Chi and Shang Tsung. It takes some time to put together damaging combos with him, but after some experimenting in practice mode, you should be causing nightmares for all of your online opponents.
In addition to Freddy Krueger, NetherRealm also released a Mortal Kombat 3-inspired skin for Sub-Zero, as well as a retro robot look for Cyber Sub-Zero. These are available free of charge, whether or not you download Fred.
Freddy is currently available for 400 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live or $4.99 on the PlayStation Network. For an even better deal, you can snag either the Xbox Live Season Pass or the PSN DLC Warrior Bundle, which give you all four downloadable combatants for 1200 points or $14.99.
Have you gotten your hands on Freddy yet? What do you think?
