Friday morning, a new trailer for the multiplayer mode of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 appeared on Youtube. Despite Activision's attempts to remove the video, mirror copies showed up on other accounts. The trailer details many changes for the upcoming installment of the popular franchise.
Among the changes is a new game mode called "Kill Confirmed." In the mode, players score by first killing their opponents then collecting dog tags that show up over the player's body. The killed player's teammates can collect the dog tags to prevent opponents from scoring. Kill Confirmed will probably favor run-and-gun type players with effective close-range weapons like shotguns and SMGs rather than snipers and other long-range players, who will have trouble collecting the dog tags. The other game modes in the trailer are Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch and Ground War, all returning from previous games in the Call of Duty series.
Another addition for Modern Warfare 3 is a class setup. The game calls these "Strike Packages." Players pick a Strike Package that defines their role in the battle. The three classes shown in the trailer are Assault, Support and Specialist. The Specialist class looks particularly unique. Instead of typical killstreaks, the Specialist Strike Package in the trailer shows the player unlocking a "Strike Chain" of 3 more perks. Each added perk unlocks at three, four and five kills in a row without dying, just like how killstreaks work. The Strike Chain perks shown in the trailer are Scavenger Pro, Steady Aim Pro and Marksman Pro.
The trailer shows a few fan favorite perks returning but most of the perks revealed are new to the series. The first tier perks shown are Recon, Extreme Conditioning and Blind Eye. The second tier perks are Quickdraw, Assassin, Blast Shield and Overkill. The tier three perks are Stalker, Sitrep and Dead Silence.
The trailer shows a mix of killstreaks new to Modern Warfare 3 as well as some from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops. The killstreaks in the trailer are UAV, AH-6 Overwatch, Juggernaut, Airdrop Trap, Remote Trap, EMP, Ballistic Vests, Recon Drone and Stealth Bomber.
A new Proficiency option for class setups appears in the trailer. The three Proficiencies shown are Kick, Focus and Attachments.
The primary guns shown are the M4 and ACR assault rifles and the Dragunov sniper rifle. Most of the gun attachments shown are scopes like the ACOG sight but the trailer confirms the Heartbeat Sensor from Modern Warfare 2 returns. Equipment and grenades include previous items like flash bangs, frag grenades and throwing knives along with a new Bouncing Betty landmine. Of the four maps shown, three were inner-city urban settings while one was a Middle-Eastern market area.
We will learn more about the Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer at the Call of Duty XP event this weekend in Los Angeles. The game's release date is November 8th for Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and Nintendo Wii.
