Microsoft is launching a service soon which will allow the Xbox 360 to offer TV shows from SyFy, HBO, and many other channels, due to a new partnership agreement which Microsoft has made with the television networks themselves.
The details of how this will work are still not clear, but it seems likely that users will have to be cable subscribers to use the feature when Xbox begins to offer TV shows, in which case it is a little hard to see where the benefit for the viewer will lie.
Microsoft has offered some experimental programming on the Xbox for months now, according to Yahoo! News, including some ESPN coverage and even some live sports.
While this is obviously a move to make the Xbox 360 more competitive with Sony's Playstation 3, which offers streaming video through Netflix, the only immediate benefit to the user that comes to mind for XBox to offer TV shows might be the ability to get access to your cable subscriptions somewhere other than your house, like at a friend's house or while on vacation.
When Microsoft begins advertising this service, perhaps they will explain other benefits that are not clear at the moment.
