Activision announced today in a press release that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 broke all previous records, selling more than 6.5 milliion games and raking in over $400 million dollars on the very first day of release.
If anyone needed proof that being able to kill people and blow things up is high on the wish list for the average American gamer, this is it. The previous record holders for launch sales were Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Black Ops, according to the article at Velocity Gamer.
The article quotes Activision CEO Bobby Kotick:
"We believe the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the biggest entertainment launch of all time in any medium, and we achieved this record with sales from only two territories. Other than Call of Duty, there has never been another entertainment franchise that has set opening day records three years in a row. Life-to-date sales for the Call of Duty franchise exceed worldwide theatrical box office for "Star Wars" and "Lord of the Rings," two of the most successful entertainment franchises of all time."
How far Activision has come from the old Atari 2600 games of the 80's!!And how lucky for them that blood and warfare have a more lasting appeal than, say music. It seems unlikely they will be cancelling Call of Duty like they did Guitar Hero anytime soon. Remember when parents were worried that comic books were too violent for kids, or that cartoons would rot the brain? What kind of effect do you suppose it has when little Junior sees Dad or big brother blowing people's heads off or blowing up buildings on the video screen?
The military uses video games for recruitment. The Call of Duty series is probably their best asset.
