Using Internet Explorer 7 (IE7)? Trying to use Facebook and all of its new redesigns on the browser, too? Then you might want to check this out.
IE7 usage might soon be phased out by the major social network, according to ZDNet, and it seems as though it is already happening. It appears the newest design roll-out, which uses Facebook Timeline, isn't supported by the ancient browser, and other design updates on Facebook are slow to respond or crash the browser altogether.
Internet Explorer 7 is about seven years old and is slowly seeing a decline in support from other websites, too. This isn't the first time Facebook has pulled the plug on an older browser; as reported by Mashable, they also cut support for Internet Explorer 6 for their chat functions in 2010.
To help people move toward a faster, more efficient browser, Facebook suggests popular ones such as Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and Safari. They also warn about using older versions of these browsers; however, most updates to newer versions are now automatic. If those options don't sound appealing, there is always the newer versions of IE, Internet Explorer 8 and 9.
As of November 2011, StatCounter reported that IE7 only had about 4 percent of the market share, and it's continuing to decline in a steady pace.
Is Facebook Timeline worth all the trouble? Probably not, but people should still be encouraged to use a better browser instead of being stuck in the past.
