With the Kindle Fire 2 release date approaching in the near future, Amazon is looking to step up its competition with the likes of other tablet makers. Most importantly, they want to establish themselves as a force in the tablet marketplace, which means competing with Apple and Samsung.
According to Seattle PI, a recent poll was released on Tuesday showing the top five manufacturers of tablets as of the second quarter of this year. Apple ranks at the top spot, which is no surprise. It had 17 million of its iPads shipped worldwide, which was equal to almost 70% of the market share. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics Co. came in at #2 with just 10% market share, or 2.3 million units shipped.
That brings in the Amazon tablet at #3. The company's Kindle Fire had about 1 million units shipped worldwide, or 4.2% share of the market. That's not bad for a company that really started the Kindle as an eReader, and then moved into the tablet niche. Keep in mind, the Kindle Fire was their first attempt, and now they'll be going at it with an upgraded edition.
That upgrade is the Kindle Fire 2. Many believe its release date will fall before the end of 2012 to help get plenty of holiday sales of the device. Amazon will need to really have made some major improvements upon the initial device's design, because they'll be competing with the new Samsung Galaxy Note, and a new iPad, possibly in miniature form. That's not even to mention the Google Nexus 7 and Microsoft's tablet devices that will give consumers plenty of choices.
The good news is that Amazon has developed a pretty good reputation and continues to innovate. They won't be left behind as technology moves towards the future, where digital content becomes more commonplace than ever before. If nothing else, they should continue to stay among the top 3, at least for the next year, as the manufacturers listed directly below are AsusTek and Barnes & Noble Inc.
Do you think the new Kindle Fire 2 will be able to help Amazon take over the #2 spot from Samsung, or is it too little, too late from the company this year?
