Bank of America's website had some ins and outs on Tuesday and the militant branch of Hamas, a Middle Eastern group, is taking credit for it. According to Information Week, this is part of an attack in response to the "Innocence of Muslims" film that has caused violence and outrage across the Isl?mic world.
However, there is little evidence that Hamas really is behind the outages; it could simply be a technical failure. That being said, an anonymous online post by "Cyber fighters of Izz ad-din Al qassam" predicted that the site would be down and also threatened the New York Stock Exchange as the next target.
It is sometimes difficult to figure out the reason for a website failure. GoDaddy had some issues recently and hackers took the credit for it. In the end, though, it was just a mechanical issue.
Even if the Bank of America issues were not the result of efforts by hackers or protesters, a spinoff could occur, where people take the bait and mimic the alleged attack.
