As of the New Year, the Kindle Fire HD 8.9-inch version of the popular tablet at Amazon is on sale. The special promotion is extended to students at a discounted price through the end of the month, on all of the larger versions of the tablet that the online retailer currently sells.
A report from PC World yesterday states that the deal gives Amazon Student members with a Prime account a discounted price on the 8.9-inch tablet of $50 off. Students are able to obtain Prime for a free six month trial period, and then have the option to pay $39 a year after the trial expires. That's about half the price of what regular Prime members pay.
The $50 discount will apply to all versions of the 8.9-inch Fire HD tablets, including the Wi-Fi only as well as the 4G LTE models. Amazon appears to be continually looking for ways to unload the larger tablets as they may not be selling quite as well as the smaller 7-inch versions. A previous discount was extended to Amazon mothers as well, and there could be more discounts in the future at this point.
Currently, the 7-inch HD tablet for $199 is the top seller in Electronics for Amazon, with the other tablets and Paperwhite eReaders also listed among the top 10. It's going to be interesting to see if Amazon is able to sell more units with all of these promotions, or if they'll eventually be forced to lower the price a bit.
It'll also be noteworthy to see what Amazon does with the future of the Kindle Fire HD. Will they discontinue the larger-sized tablets and focus solely on selling a 7-inch model? Based on popularity it seems like it could be the way to go when it comes to the next versions of their tablets.
